Disclosed is an isolated nucleic acid selected from the group consisting of: a) a nucleic acid comprising a nucleotide sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:175; b) a nucleic acid comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 85% sequence identity to a nucleotide sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:175 wherein said nucleic acid encodes a polypeptide having lactose permease activity; c) a nucleic acid comprising a fragment of a nucleotide sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:175 wherein said nucleic acid encodes a polypeptide having lactose permease activity; d) a nucleic acid that encodes a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:176 wherein said nucleic acid encodes a polypeptide having lactose permease activity; e) a nucleic acid comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding a polypeptide having at least 85% amino acid sequence identity to the amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:176 wherein said nucleic acid encodes a polypeptide having lactose permease activity and, f) a nucleic acid that hybridizes under stringent conditions to any of a)-e).
