PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and a method suitable for simply generating the shadow of an object, and to provide a program for achieving it on a computer. SOLUTION: In the apparatus, a storage unit 201 stores an object in a virtual space and a shape, position and orientation of a planar body adjacent to the object, as well as, covering polygons arranged to cover the object. Each of the covering polygons includes transmittance information, and the transmittance information represents the shadow in which a center portion is opaque and the transparency is gradually increased toward the outside. A selection unit 202 selects the covering polygon, which satisfies a predetermined condition, such as, being in contact with the planar body, from among the covering polygons that correspond to the object as a polygon for projection. A generation unit 203 projects the virtual space on a two-dimensional plane, in a sequential order of the planar body, polygon for projection and object, thereby drawing the shadow of the object on the planar body.
