PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress generation of large engine brake caused by inappropriate downshift. SOLUTION: In this control device for an automatic transmission, an automatic transmission mode for automatically switching shift stages and a manual transmission mode for switching the shift stages by manual operation by a driver are set, and a downshift switch is provided. The control device is provided with: a first manual transmission control means for performing downshift when the downshift switch is operated in the manual transmission mode; a second manual transmission control means for performing downshift when the downshift switch is operated in the automatic transmission mode; a first downshift prohibiting means for prohibiting downshift by the downshift switch when vehicle speed exceeds first allowable vehicle speed during control of the first manual transmission control means; and a second downshift prohibiting means for prohibiting downshift by the downshift switch when vehicle speed exceeds second allowable vehicle speed during control of the second manual transmission control means (NO in S260).
