The sensor (10) has an arrangement with a reference chamber (40) arranged in a sensor body (20) and a measuring chamber (30). A diffusion slot (26) supplies exhaust gas to the measuring chamber and soot is depositable in the diffusion slot, where each chamber has measuring electrodes (36, 42) for determining oxygen. A heating device is provided such that the diffusion slot is admittable with an increased temperature. The soot is oxidizable in the diffusion slot. The electrodes consist of material of smaller catalytic activity with temperature over 350 degrees Celsius. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a soot sensor.
