The device has a light source (17) e.g. LED, and a measuring table (13) arranged under a portal (2) for accommodating measurement objects. A charge coupled device camera (6) is vertically slidable at a crossbeam (4) for detecting objects in an optical axis of the camera. A read head coupled to the camera reads a material measure along a measuring line. The camera is vertically moved along a vertical guide rail that is fixed to the crossbeam. The vertical guide rail and the optical axis mount a guide plane in which the measuring line is arranged.
