<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method of controlling a motor wherein slip and backlash are prevented in a sheet feeder and a sheet is fed by a preset feed length. <P>SOLUTION: A subtractor 47 subtracts a number of feel roll pulses from a number of length measurement pulses to find a deviation in the number of pulses and a differentiator 47 carries out temporal differentiation to find a difference in speed. A BL/SL determining means determines the presence of backlash and slip based on the difference in speed. A backlash correction controlling means 50 outputs a phase correction value for preventing the backlash based on the deviation in the number of pulses. A slip correction controlling means outputs a feeder acceleration time after correction and a feeder deceleration gain value for preventing slip based on the difference in speed. A main controlling means 44 determines respective speed commands Q using the phase correction value, the feeder acceleration time after correction, and the feeder deceleration gain value.
