PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve luminous efficiency and durability in "an organic electroluminescent element using a phosphorescent material" containing a phosphorescent material in a luminous layer. SOLUTION: In the organic electroluminescent element, functional layers containing the luminous layer are sandwiched between a pair of electrodes, the luminous layer contains a phosphorescent material, and one of the functional layers contains at least one type of compound expressed by general formula (1).
