PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the occurrence of color unevenness of black due to birefringence by absorbing a difference in linear expansion between a glass substrate fitted with a quarter-wave plate and a holder, and reducing stress in a transparent substrate. SOLUTION: The four corner portions of the glass substrate 71 are removed and adhesive escape portions 75 are provided. Consequently, an adhesive 76 infiltrates slower between portions abutting against a glass substrate 71, which may not be fitted after the adhesive 76 is solidified. Thus, the adhesive 76 having a certain thickness is interposed between the glass substrate 71 and holder 73 to be elastically held, so that even if stress is generated because of a difference in coefficient of linear expansion between the holder 73 and glass substrate 71, the stress is absorbed with the elastic force of the adhesive 76 and then unevenness of a black image is reduced to improve image quality more.
