The invention relates to a modular 3D display apparatus comprising a plurality of display panels of which at least one is movable, a rendering system for generating display data for the modular 3D display apparatus, and a method of driving the modular display apparatus using the rendering system. The rendering system or the modular 3D display apparatus is adapted for receiving parameters of a geometric configuration of the plurality of display panels and rendering images from a set of viewpoints of a 3D scene to be visualized according to the geometric configuration. The rendering system or the modular 3D display apparatus is further operable to render images from a changed set of viewpoints in response to a change in the geometric configuration.
