The seal for fitting between two components where one is of a ferrous alloy, e.g. a cylinder head gasket for an internal combustion motor, has a height profile on at least one of its sealing surfaces (6). It has local projections (9) which form local flat pressed zones, when compressed between the cylinder head (2) and cylinder block to be sealed together. The gasket edges are treated by an inductive edge hardening process.
