<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight device having a low-cost heat radiating structure. <P>SOLUTION: A light emitting element 12 emits illumination light. A light guide member 13 has a side end face 13a receiving the illumination light, and a light outgoing face 13b emitting the illumination light. A case body 14 has a bottom wall part 14a and side wall parts 14b and contains the light emitting element 12 and the light guide member 13. A plurality of protrusions 14c supporting the light guide member 13 are formed on the bottom wall part 14a of the case body 14 and a heat absorbing member 16 absorbing heat from the light emitting element 12 via a heat conduction sheet 24 is disposed on the bottom wall part 14a.
