PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool having a hard coating layer exerting excellent chipping resistance in high speed intermittent cutting. SOLUTION: This hard coating layer is formed by vapor deposition on a surface of a tool base body composed of tungsten carbide based cemented carbide or titanium carbonitride based cermet. The hard coated layer is composed of (a) at least a layer of a TiC layer, a TiN layer and a TiCN layer of granular crystalline structure for serving as a lower layer, (b) a CrCNO layer of granular crystalline structure for serving as an intermediate layer, (c) a TiCN layer of longitudinally growth crystalline structure for serving as an upper layer and (d) a Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>layer for serving as an uppermost layer. As necessary, a Ti compound layer of granular crystalline structure is formed by vapor deposition between (c) and (d) as a close contact layer. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
