PROCESS FOR PRODUCTION OF END-MODIFIED VINYLIDENE FLUORIDE ELASTOMERS

A process for producing, by modification, vinylidene fluoride elastomers which bear, at either or both of the ends of the backbone chain, groups having moieties derived from sulfinic acids, sulfinic acid derivatives, sulfonic acids, or sulfonic acid derivatives, specifically, a process for the production of vinylidene fluoride elastomers bearing end groups represented by general formula: -CR1R2-CR3R4-SO2H (wherein R1 to R4 may be the same or different and is hydrogen or fluorine) at either or both of the ends of the backbone chain, characterized by reacting a vinylidene fluoride elastomer bearing an end group represented by general formula: -CR1R2-CR3R4-X1 (wherein R1 to R4 are each as defined above; and X1 is bromine or iodine) at either or both of the ends of the backbone chain with a sulfur compound represented by general formula: (M1)nH2-nS2O4 (wherein M1 is a mono- or divalent metal ion or ammonium ion; and n is an integer of 0 to 2).
