PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoder and a detector for constituting an encoder for certainly detecting the rotation amount even when a detecting section and an electric component section must be installed in separate places under various environments. SOLUTION: This encoder 10 includes the detecting section 12 and the electric component section 44. The detecting section 12 is connected to the electric component section 14 via an optical fiber 16 for projection on the detecting section side and optical fiber 18 for reception on the detecting section side made of synthetic resin, and an optical fiber 20 for projection on the electric component section side and optical fiber 22 for reception on the electric component section side made of glass. When a plurality of light emitting elements 28 emit light, the light is radiated to a scale plate 36 via the optical fiber 20 for projection on the electric component section side and the optical fiber 16 for projection on the detecting section side. Light having passed a slit of the scale plate 36 and been reflected by the scale is guided to a plurality of light receiving elements 32 via the optical fiber 18 for reception on the detecting section side and the optical fiber 22 for reception on the electric component section side.
