The overlay order of a specific ink and other inks is controlled, while measures are taken so that deviation in the acceptable rate of recording with the specific ink during a recording scan (during a pass) is not greater than necessary to execute multi-pass recording. The acceptable rate of recording with the specific ink for unit pixels is determined for each scan according to information relating to the other inks and the specific ink supplied to unit pixels (CMYK information or RGB information, for example). According to the application conditions of the specific ink and the other inks, scans in which specific ink is provided in a concentrated form can be thereby varied, and the ratio of the specific ink supplied in scans before or after the other inks can be changed. The result is that the overlay order of the specific ink and the other inks can be controlled.
