<p>The tensioner (1') has a clamping piston (20) movably taken up in a hollow cylinder (30), and a pressure chamber (40) for admitting a hydraulic fluid, where the pressure chamber is limited by the clamping piston and the hollow cylinder. A circular element (100) and an actuator (110) facilitate withdrawal of the hydraulic fluid from the pressure chamber. The circular element and the actuator are controllable for changing the damping characteristic of the tensioner. Controllability of the circular element is realized by the actuator.</p>
