The method involves measuring a fill level of a fluid (1) i.e. oil, in a container (3), where the fill level is corrected by a correction value. Warning is outputted, when the fill level lies below a threshold value. The correction and threshold values are selected based on a fill level of another fluid (2) in another container (4) or based on the case that the fluid (2) is refilled. The correction value is deduced from the fill level of the fluid (1) in the container (3), where the correction value is similar to 0, when the threshold value is selected based on the fill level of the fluid. An independent claim is also included for a warning device for a small fill level of a fluid in a container for a motor vehicle.
