PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a "filter characteristic setting apparatus" which achieves sound output in accordance with user preference and is capable of suppressing the occurrence of sound distortion or the like. SOLUTION: A CPU 30 outputs test signals (TSP) from a plurality of loudspeakers (and sub-woofers), acquires frequency characteristic data thereof, and determines on the basis of the relevant frequency characteristic data whether or not a sub-woofer is connected to an audio system 100. If the sub-woofer is not connected, as a result of the determination, target characteristics are set to a target curve 1; and if a sub woofer is connected, the target characteristics are set to a target curve 2. Furthermore, the CPU 30 sets filter characteristics so that total frequency characteristics of an audio signals output from loudspeakers or sub-woofers through digital filters 22A1-22A4, 22B may match the set target curve.
