A paper note handling apparatus in connection with an external apparatus has a receiving section to receive, one by one, the paper notes inserted by a customer, an identification section to identify the paper notes received by the receiving section, an image data acquisition section to acquire the image data of the paper notes received by the receiving section, a banknote pile-up section to pile up the banknotes, an alternative currency media pile-up section to pile up the alternative currency media, a carrier section to carry the paper notes received by the receiving section, a control section that controls the carrier section to carry the paper notes identified as the banknotes by the identification section to the banknote pile-up section and to carry the paper notes identified as the alternative currency media by the identification section to the alternative currency media pile-up section, and a data transfer section to transfer the image data of the paper notes identified as the alternative currency media by the identification section to the external apparatus.
