<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure the impact absorbing stroke of a steering column by inhibiting the interference between a column cover and a locking device when the steering column is contracted for absorbing the impact as a knee air bag is expanded. <P>SOLUTION: When the expansion pressure of the knee air bag works in the column cover 16, an air bag door 60 mounted in the column cover 16 is expanded toward a vehicle interior side. At the time, a lock cover part 64C covering the locking device 36 in the column cover 16 is removed from a regular position. If a load of a prescribed value or larger is input to the steering column, the impact is absorbed by the contraction of the steering column. However, as the lock cover part 64C is removed from the regular position and the strength of the column cover 16 is lower than the usual strength, interference between the column cover 16 and the locking device 36 can be inhibited. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
