PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine having a function to change relative operation characteristics of an intake valve and an exhaust valve with respect to the rotating operation of a crankshaft of the internal combustion engine and a mechanism for fixing the operation characteristics in the middle of the variable range, and capable of suitably suppressing deterioration in engine operation performance caused by a malfunction of the mechanism. SOLUTION: A valve timing variable mechanism 100 is hydraulically controlled based on a duty command value of an electronic control device 50, and variably adjusts a relative phase (valve timing) of the crankshaft and the intake valve. An intermediate position lock pin 131 has a function to appropriately fix valve timing in the intermediate position within a variable range. When performing the timing advance control of the valve timing according to a request to increase an internal EGR amount, the electronic control device 50 performs control to correct a fuel injection amount to the internal combustion engine (engine) to eliminate the shortage of internal EGR caused by the malfunction of the intermediate position lock pin 131.
