PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing a fluorenone-containing polyester useful as an optical material, a high-strength material etc. SOLUTION: The fluorene-containing polyester represented by general formula (IV) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; R<SP>2</SP>is an alkylene group, an arylene group, an alkylene arylene alkylene group or an arylene alkylene arylene group; and a part of hydrogen atoms on the ring and a part of hydrogen atoms of R<SP>2</SP>may be substituted with a substituent not participating in the reaction) is produced by reacting a fluorene-containing diol with a dicarboxylic acid or its derivative in the presence or absence of ethylene glycol or a polyethylene glycol under microwave irradiation.
