PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly detect an original edge from image data as the result of a reading. SOLUTION: The device converts the image data displaying reading images of an original into edge image data, and detects the right edge of the original extended in the vertical-scanning (the Y axis) direction while referring to the image data. Edge points as the candidates of the right edge are searched from the right end of the image data in the case of detection. More concretely, groups of edge points continuous in the Y-axial direction are searched. When the continuous edge points are interrupted, the search of the continuous edge points is reopened from the right end of the image data corresponding at the interrupted spot. Degrees of dissociations in the X-axial direction among adjacent groups are computed (S660) and the groups positioned in the Y-axial minus direction having high degrees of dissociations from the group having a maximum Y coordinate value are annulled as candidates having a low accuracy as the right edge (S690) regarding each group at the edge points continuous in the Y-axial direction as candidates of the right edge.
