PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect a contact state of a secondary transfer part with an intermediate transfer body in really required timing. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a control part which controls to perform processing to detect the contact state of a secondary transfer roller 113 with an intermediate transfer belt 124 by allowing a toner pattern density detection part 23 to detect the density of the toner pattern remaining on the intermediate transfer belt 124 after it allows an image forming part 12 to form and transfer the toner pattern onto the intermediate transfer belt 124 and to transfer the toner pattern to the secondary transfer roller 113. The control part controls such that the processing to detect the contact state is performed when a paper jamming detection sensor 19 detects that paper jamming caused near a nip part between the secondary transfer roller 113 and the intermediate transfer belt 124 is eliminated.
