PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of speedily correcting a print density even in case of an extreme density change by adjusting a development bias without stopping consecutive printing. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a toner image forming means for forming toner images on an intermediate transfer belt; a test image forming means for forming a test image between the two toner images on this intermediate transfer belt; a density detection means for detecting the density of the test images; a difference calculating means for calculating a difference between a predetermined ideal value and that density; an increasing/decreasing means for increasing or decreasing the development bias of the toner image according to the difference. This makes it possible to quickly make a density correction if a development characteristic changes. In addition, the apparatus is provided with a restart means for restarting the test image forming means after the increase or decrease, and a determining means for determining an optimum value for the development bias based on that density and the density of the test image obtained by the restart.
