<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phosphor consisting of materials different from those of conventional rare earth-activated sialon phosphor and oxide phosphor. <P>SOLUTION: The phosphor includes AAl<SB>2</SB>Si<SB>5</SB>O<SB>2</SB>N<SB>8</SB>crystal (A is Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba or Zn) or its solid solution crystal in which metal ions M (M is at least one selected from Mn, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Tm, and Yb) is solid-soluted. The phosphor emits fluorescent light having a peak at a wavelength ranging from 450-700 nm. The phosphor is produced when a raw material mixture comprising metals, oxides, carbonates, nitrides, and the like of A, Al, and Si respectively is burnt at 1,200-2,200°C in a nitrogen atmosphere.
