PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and highly reliable optical pickup with less signal lines. SOLUTION: An operation mode is switched between in recording/reproducing and in adjustment. A switching means and a holding means therefor are mounted on a light receiving element. The optical pickup includes a light source for emitting a laser beam, an objective lens for focusing the laser beam on the recording layer of an optical disk, and a light receiving element for receiving a signal light modulated on the recording layer. The light receiving element has an adjustment mode for selecting an address to output the signal of an individual light receiving surface, and a sensitivity switching signal line and a switching signal line to the adjustment mode. The light receiving element is configured so that address selection signal line of the individual light receiving surface in the adjustment mode also serves as the sensitivity switching signal line.
