The receiver (4) and the portable device (16) have the capacity to transmit and receive control signals to and from each other, typically via an infra red signal transmission system and the portable device (16) can access external data system providers such as internet service providers via the broadcast data receiver (4) and a communications link from the receiver to the external telecommunications network.
