A driving unit for a surface light source device, the surface light source device using the same and a backlight unit are provided to reduce the number of elements included in a driving circuit and secure the circuit reliability. A light source body(110) comprises a discharge space to which the discharge gas is injected. Electrodes apply the discharge voltage to the discharge space so that the light source body can have the start interval and end interval of the discharge. The discharge voltage is the discharge start voltage in the start interval or greater, and is smaller than the discharge sustain voltage in the end interval.
