PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a magnetic head which can make a main magnetic pole thinner than before. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the magnetic head includes: a process for depositing a magnetic layer 30 on a substrate 1; a process for depositing a mask layer 34 on the magnetic layer 30; a process for forming a mask 34a on the magnetic layer 30 by patterning the mask layer 34; a process for removing exposed parts from the mask 34a by executing either a first ion milling or dry etching to the magnetic layer 30; and a process for narrowing the width by executing wet etching from the side to the magnetic layer 30 left between the substrate 1 and the mask 34a so that the width of the tip end of the main magnetic pole can be narrowed further to apply for high recording density magnetic recording medium.
