The handbrake system (10) has a manual control unit (20) comprising a connector (32) for an electronic braking system (34), where the handbrake system is integrated in a drive (14) of a vehicle (12). A control device (16) is coupled with a trailer control module (18) and controls the drive and a clutch (26) of the vehicle. The manual control unit transmits a driver command to the control device, where the command is provided for operating the handbrake system. A battery (30) is provided for power supply during power breakdown. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a handbrake system.
