A current-carrying system from which current may be collected at any point by sliding collector carriages guided therein, comprises several conductors 2 insulatingly arranged one above another on a supporting rail 1, the longitudinal edges of which form running tracks for the collector carriages, a U-shaped protecting casing 12 being removably fitted on the rail and extending beyond it, leaving a labyrinth-like slot between it and the rail through which access to the conductors is obtained. Fig. 1 shows one embodiment in which the rail is completely flat and each carriage comprises a base-plate 4 carrying sliding or rolling contacts 7 engaging the conductors 2, and spindles 5 carrying rollers 6 which engage the edges of the rail. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the edges of the rail are bent over at about 45 degrees away from the side carrying the conductors, whereby the rollers may run alongside the rail to make the system more compact. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the edges of the rail are bent over in U-form towards the side carrying the conductors. The axles of the rollers may be adjustable whereby the carriages may be removed from the rail at any point. Fig. 7 shows a carriage suitable for curved rails in which the rollers 6 are mounted on hinged wings 17, whereby they adapt themselves to the curves and maintain the contactcarrying part 4 at a constant distance from the conductors. Removal of a carriage from the rail is effected by taking out one hinge-pin. The rail is assembled in short lengths, adjacent lengths being connected by bolting on a strip 13, Fig. 9, expansion of the conductors being allowed for by leaving gaps between them and connecting them by flexible strips 14 bolted on their rear faces, the sleeve 13 and rail being cut away to permit access thereto. |
