Copolymers of maleic anhydride with other monomers are cross-linked by mixing the copolymer with 0.02 to 25 equivalents per hundred parts by weight of the copolymer of a cross-linking agent of formula R-(X)n where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having 2 to 30 carbon atoms, X is a primary or secondary -OH, SH or NHR1 group where R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, and n is at least 2, at 25 DEG C. to 100 DEG C. in an inert organic diluent. The maleic anhydride may be copolymerized with an aliphatic or aromatic vinyl ether or ester, a vinyl aromatic monomer, a mono-olefin, an acrylate or methacrylate ester, a vinyl halide, a vinyl nitrile, an unsaturated carboxylic acid, a vinyl amide, a vinyl tertiary amine, or an allyl ester. The cross-linking agent may be a glycol, a triol, a tetrol, a pentitol, a hexitol, a heptitol, a saccharide, a polyhydric amine, a polyhydric thioglycol, a polyhydric amino alcohol, or a thio amine. Lists of monomers and cross-linking agents are given. In examples copolymers of maleic anhydride with methylvinyl ether, isobutylene, styrene and vinyl acetate, are cross-linked with sorbitol, ethanol amine, glycerol, ethylene diamine, ethylene glycol, pentaerythritol, 2-mercapto ethanol, hexamethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, and 2-amino-1-butanol. |
