An alphabet character input apparatus and method of a portable phone terminal are provided to perform the successive selection and display of characters in an order that usage frequency is high, thereby reducing key operation number and an input time. Usage frequency data obtained by analyzing the usage frequency of alphabet characters is stored in a memory. A controller selects a character corresponding to key input frequency of characters allocated to a corresponding input key in an order that usage frequency is high and stores the character in the memory based on the usage frequency data stored in the memory whenever a key is continually input(S12~S15). The controller controls a display unit to display the selected characters on the same character blank alternatively whenever the key is input(S19).
