A refrigerator and a control method thereof are provided to automatically open a door of a refrigerating compartment for lowering the cavity temperature of the refrigerating compartment by introducing atmospheric air, thereby reducing power consumption. A refrigerator includes a refrigerating compartment having a door to be automatically opened or closed, a cavity temperature detecting part(30) for detecting the cavity temperature of the refrigerating compartment, an atmospheric air temperature detecting part(40), and a control part(50) for controlling cooling operation for the refrigerating compartment according to the detected cavity/atmospheric air temperature.
