The device (1) has an actuator (7) i.e. gear motor, for providing mechanical action on a control unit (2) of a steer-by-wire, and a controller (5) for controlling power supply of the actuator. The controller includes an estimator (8) i.e. Luenberger observer, for estimating intensity of the mechanical action applied by a driver on the control unit. The estimator utilizes kinematic data of the control unit, utilizes kinematic data of the actuator or utilizes torsion data of a transmission element between the control unit and the actuator. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an application device applying a mechanical action on a control unit of a steer-by-wire.
