PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading device which provides excellent operability and workability when a copy function and a scanner function are used, and to provide an image reading method. SOLUTION: An image reading device Z which includes a first scanner 1 that reads front side information of a manuscript P and a second scanner 2 that reads back side information of the manuscript P, has a recognition means for recognizing a mark inscribed on the back side of the manuscript P read by the second scanner 2 and determining a content of a process. This mark is printed within a predetermined range with density or brightness and show-through effects of the front side information may be prevented. This mark may be printed with an ink whose color disappears in response to light with a specific wavelength or an ink whose color disappears by heating.
