PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a floating ring mechanical seal capable of exerting an excellent seal function for a long time without causing any abnormal wear of a seal surface even under a high load condition in which the PV value exceeds 80 MPa m/s. SOLUTION: In the floating ring mechanical seal, a rotary ring 6 is formed of a compound silicon carbide in which spherical carbon is diffused in a dense silicon carbide structure, and an floating ring 8 is formed of carbon more flexible than a material of the rotary ring 6. When the mechanical seal is used under the high load condition in which the PV value is 80-130 MPa m/s, the wear of the rotary ring 6 on the seal surface 6a is≤1μm/hr, and the wear on a seal surface 83a of the floating ring 8 in contact with the seal surface 6a is≤0.1μm/hr.
