PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element which has at least one macro-optical characteristics, as well as, a light-diffusing and shaping surface structure which is provided by surface micro-structures, formed integrally in a portion of an optical element. SOLUTION: A monolithic optical element (50) has a substrate body (52), macro-optical characteristics (54) which is formed integrally in the substrate body and is affected by aberrations, and a plurality of micro-structures (56). The micro-structures (56) are designed to homogenize light which emits the monolithic optical element (50) via the macro-optical characteristic (54) by diffusion and to direct the light so that a predetermined light distribution pattern, wherein the intensity smoothly and continuously varies, is formed by substantially the entire optical output of the monolithic optical element (50). The substrate body (52), the macro-optical characteristic s(54), and the micro-structures (56) cooperate, to cause the monolithic optical element to produce the optical output, giving a predetermined light distribution pattern, and aberrations are corrected.
