PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent shift instruction from bothering a driver while driving on a congested road, in a gear shift indicating device giving the shift instruction to the driver. SOLUTION: The gear shift indicating device gives the shift instruction to the driver when a current gear position differs from a target gear position. The gear shift indicating device determines whether a vehicle is traveling on a congested road, from a vehicle speed and a throttle opening amount and the like, as well as determines the frequency with which the driver shifts according to the shift instruction. When the road on which the vehicle is traveling is congested and the frequency with which the driver shifts according to the shift instruction is low, the gear shift indicator cancels the shift instruction even if the current gear differs from the target gear.
