The method involves operating both inlet and exhaust valves by a common cam shaft (18) that is attached to a phase adjuster (28), when a loading condition of a filter device exceeds a predetermined condition. An internal combustion engine i.e. diesel engine, is temporally changed to an overrun condition after the loading operation. Closing time points of the intake valve and closing time points times of the exhaust valve are adjusted by the phase adjuster independent upon an actual number of revolutions of the engine, such that a volumetric efficiency of the engine is reduced.
