There is provided a memory monitoring method for outputting the calculation result of an error detection code such as a CRC code or the like as an abnormality even when all data has been lost and has become the state of 'ALL 0' by an unauthorized act. Specifically, the memory monitoring method is used in an electronic device (1) comprising a first memory (15) in which secret data and an error detection code are stored and a second memory (11) in which work data necessary for each type of operations of the electronic device (1) is stored. In the memory monitoring method, when the electronic device (1) is started up, the error detection code stored in the first memory (15) is stored into the second memory (11); meanwhile, the error detection code of the confidential data stored in the first memory (15) is calculated and the error detection code obtained as a result of the calculation is compared with the error detection code stored in the second memory (11).
