PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To identify each display device without adding an image that disturbs visibility and to limit processing for the identified display device or the image displayed on the display device if necessary. SOLUTION: When a black image is displayed on the whole screen 105 with electrophoretic elements arranged, a white defective image PB3 appears in dots. The white defective image PB3 is an image equivalent to an electrophoretic element (a defective display element) that cannot be driven. Since such a defective display element is included at 1-5% of the whole electrophoretic element on the screen 105, the positions and the number are various depending on the display device. Each display device can thereby be identified from the distributed condition of the image corresponding to the defective display element. In this way, the display device is identified without adding the image including identification information and disturbing visibility, to the image displayed on the screen 105, and processing can be limited accordingly.
