PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an abnormality in a reverse signal output system of a crank angle sensor with a reverse rotation detecting function which outputs a reverse rotation pulse signal when an engine rotates in the reverse direction. SOLUTION: When a predetermined automatic stop condition is satisfied in a stop of an engine, this control device automatically stops the engine 11. When the rotation of the engine 11 is stopped in this automatic stop, reverse rotation control for controlling an engine speed and an auxiliary machine load (for example, a load of an alternator) of the engine 11 is carried out so as to obtain a crank angle easy to generate reverse rotation immediately before the stop (for example, a crank angle corresponding to an angle immediately before the top dead center of compression). When a condition wherein a reverse pulse signal is not outputted from the crank angle sensor 34 continues for a predetermined time in the execution of the reverse control, an abnormal condition wherein a reverse pulse signal is not outputted from the crank angle sensor 34 is determined, and the abnormality of the reverse rotation signal output system of the crank angle sensor 34 is determined.
