PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide nickel oxide powder having a lower sulfur content and higher fineness than conventional nickel oxide and a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: Anhydrous nickel sulfate, nickel sulfate monohydrate or a mixture of these is fired in a temperature range of 780 to <900°C in an oxidizing atmosphere to obtain nickel oxide powder. The anhydrous nickel sulfate or nickel sulfate monohydrate used for the firing can be obtained by calcining a nickel sulfate hydrate at 150-600°C in an oxidizing atmosphere. If necessary, the nickel oxide powder obtained by the firing is mixed with a solvent to prepare slurry and this slurry is subjected to dispersion treatment by opposed collision under high pressure or by passing through a bottleneck.
