PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce a carboxylic acid using inexpensive methanol available in a large amount. SOLUTION: A method for producing the carboxylic acid according to a fermentation method includes culturing a methanol-assimilating bacterium capable of producing the carboxylic acid in a liquid culture medium containing the methanol and a counterion, and producing, and accumulating the carboxylic acid in the same culture medium. In the method, a substance comprising the methanol and the counterion is fed into the culture medium by feed-batch culturing and the total ionic strength in the fermentation culture medium is controlled to a prescribed level or below.
