The present application discloses an in vitro method for determining the type of allergy wherein a sample a) is reacted with an allergen comprising at least one epitope to which IgE antibodies bind and b) the sample is further reacted with a hypoallergen derivative essentially corresponding to the allergen as used in step a) which does not contain any IgE epitope and c) the extent of the reaction between allergen and the sample and the corresponding hypoallergen and the sample is measured.
