PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that in a conventional PDLC, the whole surface thereof becomes transparent at the same time when a voltage is applied, because a fixed potential is applied to an ITC, while the whole surface becomes scattered at the same time when the voltage application is stopped, and that it is difficult to display a variety of display images due to simple operation. SOLUTION: In this liquid crystal optical device, the resistance of ITOs 2a and 3a on glass substrates 2 and 3 are increased, a voltage is applied to one end, while the other end is grounded to change a potential along a current flowing direction in each of ITOs. A high potential area quickly becomes transparent, and a low potential area gradually becomes transparent or partially becomes transparent.
