#CMT# #/CMT# The system (1) has an active optical sensor e.g. HALIOS(RTM: multi-purpose optical sensor), staying in operative connection with a timer and a regulating or switching device. A control of an illuminant (4) is provided by a circuit that is coupled with the regulating or switching device, and a control of a luminous period and a luminous intensity is provided by the circuit that is coupled with the timer. A sensor-active region (3) is assigned to the optical sensor and aligned spatially to the optical sensor. #CMT# : #/CMT# An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a lighting system. #CMT#USE : #/CMT# Controllable lighting system i.e. wall socket lamp, for illuminating an outdoor area. #CMT#ADVANTAGE : #/CMT# The system is designed such that it can be used controllably at a desired time during darkness in outdoor areas for any or desired time duration under availability of a defined luminosity. The system is switched-on and again switched-off in dependence of the time duration defined by the timer, so that a desired luminous period can be determined.
