PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a map information providing method for easily providing map information to a portable terminal in an appropriate display state (a range) corresponding to a position, and to provide a system. SOLUTION: The map information providing method to be performed by a map information providing system includes: an identification information acquisition step (step 109) for allowing the portable terminal 6 to obtain URL data 38 from a plurality of reader/writers 4 which are previously arranged in respective places so as to impart the URL data 38 to the respective portable terminals 6; an identification information transmission step (step 110) for allowing the portable terminal 6 to transmit the URL data 38 to a map information server 2, to which it is connected so as to be communicable and which includes a storage means 12 with basic map data 18 stored therein; and map image transmission steps (steps 112-118) for allowing the map information server 2 to generate a map image 70 with referring to the basic map data 18 within the range corresponding to the URL data 38 when the URL data 38 is received, and transmit the map image to the portable terminal 6.
